'B' Finals

D11 HEATHER BATTLES 21
D9 Fran Todd 18
Heather started her week at the 117th WOBA tournament and completed it as the Female Bowler of the Week against a skilled field. This British Columbia trained bowler now working in Ontario quickly exhibited her draw skills by playing lead on the 2011 Canadian Gold Medal team skipped by Kelly McKerihen. Close with her teammates in qualifying for Montreal in the other disciplines, she is on the edge to do it solo.
Her opponent Fran Todd doesn't have a similar trophy resume but do note this lady can bowl. She has represented District 9 in Singles in consecutive years in a District that can play with the best. Fran made a run with Dorthea Phair in the just completed Provincial Pairs Championships and gives every indication she is setting her sights beyond Ontario's bowling borders.
D11 Jeff Harding 21
D6 Dave Houtby 9
Jeff is a native of New Zealand and his developed skill from his homeland has led to great success in Canada. Canadian Gold 2011 with Chris Stadnyk; Canadian Bronze 2009 Singles; Canadian Gold 2008 with Mark Sandford; Canadian Silver in 07 again with Sandford. His measured, controlled style produces machine like accuracy.
Dave Houtby has been a fixture on the Canadian bowling scene for many a year. National team member, International competitor, Canadian Champ in 2002 as a Skip in Fours, another Gold in 04 as the Vice for Ian Jones. It seem to me, in my experience, if there is a Provincial play down the name Dave Houtby will be on the roster somewhere in the year of play. In the main Dave has switched his contribution to the team by playing the front end. Or was it just to get ready for this top end match?
Women
GOLD FINAL
D6 Katherine Smith 21
D2 Jeniffer Fisher 4
I first met Katherine at an OLBA Development Clinic in Scarborough. She was dedicated and serious to soak up any information that could advance her game. It was a sign that she intended to put in the effort to become better. She has and her results are proof of the return on perseverance. From Provincially unknown, she did skip her 2009 team to Ontario Seniors Gold, Katherine has become a fixture at the Ontario play downs in all disciplines.
Jeniffer, out of London, is steady and strong with her consistent draw game. She played lead for the Sue Roth skipped Fours team that won Canadian Silver in 2010 in Edmonton. Ironically she beat Sue 21-17 in Round 2 on the way to this gold medal game.

Men
GOLD FINAL
D15 Steven Miller 16
D5 Mike Bester 21
It seems to me that Steve decided to dedicate his 2012 season to better preparation for a run at the Provincials. There is no doubt he can play, Canadian Silver in 08 in the Under 25, Ontario Gold in Mixed in 2011 with Sylvain Poulain, but the decision involved travelling as necessary to find strong early season competition. Brighton to Niagara Falls is now on his GPS.
We all know Mike Bester. A key cog in the dynamic Bester family that roared out of Hanover to finesse and whack their way to Canadian bowls prominence. Mike is now in Burlington and has been at every other Provincial this year - working the desk in a fun fund raiser  for OLBA. But time to put aside the administration job and perform another task in which he is very good at.

PAIR UP AND WINNIE

Ron Whitehead, Tom Roth D1
James Covell, Kevin Jones D2

Carol Carter, Maureen Thompson D2
Cindy Higgins, Carol Finlayson D13

PLAYING FOR GOLD SUNDAY JULY 8, 8:30 AM
Two home teams accomplished it the hard way to qualify for Sunday's Gold Medal game.
Maureen Thompson and Carol Carter did it more spectacularly by scoring 3 in the last end to tie and then
nipping D9's Dorthea Phair and Fran Todd in the extra end in Round three. Thompson sliced the jack to Carter's 3 yard back bowls to prolong the match and then good lead bowls by Carol in the add on provided a safe resting spot after Phair trailed the jack.
The D2 ladies will face Cindy Higgins and Carol Finlayson who pulled on their bowling gloves and dug deep all day. Out of the blocks early in Round 1, they edged a pre-tournament favourite, Susan Smith and  Laura Hudson 15-14 in their next game and proceeded to stay steady and controlled in edging the Niagara area team of Katherine Smith/ Rosemarie Small 13-11 to end the day.
Kevin Jones and James Covell were consistent, albeit created a bit of a concern for their fans, in the hot humid weather all day long. Down a handful of points and more in each of their 3 matches in the early going, the wily veterans nipped and tucked until the deficit was erased and the day was won.
They will face the dynamic duo from District 1, Tom Roth and his son in law Ron Whitehead. Draw and
drive is their modus operandi. Get them close but if not whack the opponents and start again.
A breakfast treat being served on Dundas East on the morrow.

You can't get to London this weekend! Ontario Bowls Championships you know and the action and weather will be hot. Perhaps even a little rain to muddy the results.
I am experimenting with the draw, predicting, seeding, looking at another way.

I have requested of a group of veteran competitive bowlers, not in the Pairs competition, to pick the top ten from each division.I have reduced that number to the top 8 for mock draft purposes.
